ASEP A.CONCEPT Lecture: Design of Concrete Bridges

ASEP Summit 2012 invites you to an A.CONCEPT lecture on:
What: LEC-02: Design of RC Bridges
When: June 8, 2012
Time: 13:30-15:00
Where: La Breza Hotel, QC
Who: Resource Speaker – Alden Paul D. Balili
About the Lecture:

The National Structural Code of the Philippines (NSCP) 2011 Volume II Bridges, 3rd Edition is  updated to incorporate the latest bridge code provisions by the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO). This lecture intends to discuss the changes to key provisions in the Bridge code. Also, the concepts and principles behind the code provisions would also be discussed for a deeper understanding of the listener.
The lecture will be divided into two parts namely, (1) superstructure and the (2) substructure. The basic design steps for the superstructure will be discussed with emphasis on the allowable stress design checks for prestressed bridges, then the key code provisions and design concepts will be also be discussed but the emphasis will be on the seismic design for the substructure.

Keywords: Bridge Design, Seismic Analysis

About the Lecturer:

Alden Paul D. Balili obtained his MS in Civil Engineering major in Structural Engineering from the De La Salle University in 2009.  He is currently teaching at the DLSU Matrix Theory of Structures, Finite Element Method, Strength of Materials, Earthquake Engineering and Bridge Design since 2010.   His research specializes on optimization of structures and creating computer programs for Structural Engineering. He is experienced in the design of buildings, bridges and telecommunication structures and has designed structures for Philippine, American, New Zealand, European and Australian Structural Codes. He worked for seven years in Parsons Brinckerhoff before joining DLSU Manila and has 8 years of continuous design experience.

ASEP Plenary Lecture: Prestressed Concrete Design & Construction: A State of the Art Report

ASEP Summit 2012 invites you to an A.CONCEPT lecture on:
What: PLE-02: Prestressed Concrete Design & Construction: A State of the Art Report
When: June 8, 2012
Time: 11:00-12:00 AM
Where: La Breza Hotel, QC
Who: Resource Speaker – Brian Lim (VSL-Intrafor, HK)

About the lecture:

Post-tensioning has been one of the most significant developments in the 20th Century. It has contributed greatly to the economical construction of bridges, through the use of innovative construction methods such as cantilever construction, incremental launching and in particular through precast segmental construction methods in bridges. In buildings, prestressed precast and in-situ post-tensioning are the preferred construction method in many countries for many types of building structures such as offices, shopping centres, convention centres, warehouses, car parks, hotels and resorts. Recent developments in national codes, construction material and emphasis on sustainable construction, have led to a significant departure in the way we design and construct prestressed concrete structures. In this paper, a state of the art prestressed concrete design and construction of buildings, bridges and special structures will be examined.

Keywords: State of the art, prestressed, concrete, design, construction, bridges, buildings.

About the lecturer:

Brian Lim is concurrently the Senior Business Development Manager, VSL Hong Kong Limited, HKSAR, China, and the Regional Chief Marketing Officer of VSL Asia Pacific. He is involved in the business development and marketing of VSL core activities in the Asia Pacific Region  including the post-tensioning works in buildings and bridges, structural products, construction systems and construction engineering.  He obtained both his Master of Civil Engineering (1983) and Bachelor of Civil Engineering (with Distinction, 1980) from Carleton University, Ottawa, Canada.  He is an accredited Hong Kong BEAM Professional and an Institutional Member of the Hong Kong Green Building Council. His professional experience include:

Design, construction and marketing works include:
·         2,500,000m2 of post-tensioned floors (since 1988)
·         Design of building structures
·         Design of civil structures

Repair and strengthening works:
·         Strengthening of structures using external post-tensioning
·         Making opening, demolition and strengthening of post-tensioned structures.

Heavy lifting works:
·         Heavy lifting works include lifting, sliding and launching of precast beams, planks, floors, roofs, formworks systems and bridges.

Research and Development works includes:
·         Representing VSL Asia Pacific in VSL Group Commercial & Technical Committees
·         Getting approvals for VSL products: GC Anchorages, CS anchorages, VSL ECR removable external anchorages, VSL Retained Earth system etc.

Training:
Training engineers and assisting consultants in prestressed concrete design and mechanized construction methods.
