About the Lecture:

In this modern age of technology and fast track project, the role of the structural design engineer is crucial. The author will contribute to his experience how to handle such crisis. Managing a firm includes managing technology and best of all the clients. The author develops within his experience a new approach to better cope up with this on-going situation. A new direction is proposed to expand the role of the a new designer – structural artist as coined by David Billington as to the new development of modern architecture, its role and position in the Philippine construction industry.

About the Lecturer:

Engr. Anthony Vladimir C. Pimentel, a BSCE, is the president of Pimentel & Associates Engineering Consultants. He received his B.S. Civil Structural Engineering from the University of the East in 1986 and Master of Structural Engineering (units only), from the Pamantasan Lungsod ng Maynila. He was elected twice as an ASEP Board of Director for the years 1999-2001.

His 15 years experience in Structural Engineering Consultancy moulded his expertise to work with complicated design structures both locally and internationally. He had worked as a Military Engineer Consultant in Setsubi  Kenkyusho, Japan for military projects. He had also worked with Empsco Engineering in Guam as an Independent Structural Consultant for low to high rise buildings.

About the lecture:

Most civil engineering graduates who have passed the board examination and most practicing

civil engineers are generally employed either locally or abroad. This is because the general

training and orientation of Filipino engineers is that they must finish and earn their civil

engineering degree to find a good paying job. This paper intends to provide an alternative

perspective for the civil engineers to consider a complete paradigm shift to entrepreneurship

while at the same practicing their chosen field of profession and specialization.

At the end of the presentation, the participants are expected to be able to:

• Understand the forms of business entity
• Know the government agencies where to register a business
• Know the procedures of registration with the BIR, understand bookkeeping requirements and tax activities such as tax mapping and tax forms
• Know the ins and outs of business permitting and licensing
• Know the information on the minimum basic consultancy fees

About the lecturer:

Adam C. Abinales, M.ENG., F.ASEP, PICE, runs his own consulting firm as Managing Principal of Adam Abinales Engineering & Consultancy. He is an accredited civil-structural engineer/consultant of Smart Communications, Inc. (SMART), Philippine Long Distance Telephone Company (PLDT), Digitel Mobile Philippines, Inc. (SUN CELLULAR), Bayan Telecommunications (BAYANTEL), Bell Telecommunications (BELLTEL), Ericsson Communications, Inc. (ERICSSON), ABC Development Corporation (TV5), GMA Network(GMA7), Manila Water Company, Inc. (MWCI), Phinma Property Holdings Corporation (PPHC) and other various local construction companies like First Balfour, Inc., , Thaison Builders, etc. He is presently a member of the PICE National Board. He served as President of the Association of Structural Engineers of the Philippines in 2009-2010. He graduated from the Mapua Institute of Technology (MIT) with the degrees of BSCE and BSEnSE in 1980 and 1984, respectively. He finished his Master of Engineering, Major in Civil Engineering (Structural) at Adamson University in May 2011. He worked as faculty member / associate professor in the School of Civil Engineering and Environmental & Sanitary Engineering at the MIT from 1981 to 1987, 2007 to 2009 and taught structural engineering design subjects.
